What people mean by a virtual CMO
The phrase covers two very different things. The older meaning is a person: an experienced marketing leader who works remotely for several companies at once, usually on a monthly retainer, and joins your leadership meetings by video. Firms sell this as virtual CMO services, and in practice it overlaps almost completely with what other people call a fractional CMO.
The newer meaning is software. An AI CMO does the same management job, deciding where the money goes, writing the plan, holding the work to the plan and reporting to the CEO, but it does it every day against live data rather than in a weekly session. VirtualCmo is built for that second meaning, and it is honest about where the first one still makes sense.
Both versions exist for the same reason. Companies between roughly 2 and 100 million USD in revenue spend real money on marketing, yet nobody senior owns the question of whether that money will produce the pipeline the revenue goal needs. Channels get picked by habit, budgets follow last year, and agencies grade their own homework. Recruiting and staffing firms feel this twice, because marketing has to win client job orders and candidates at the same time, which is why we wrote a separate page on the virtual CMO for recruiters and staffing agencies. Law firms have a similar split between paid demand and referral work, covered on the fractional CMO for law firms page.

What a remote human virtual CMO delivers
A good remote CMO brings pattern recognition. They have seen a dozen companies at your stage, they know which channels tend to work in your category, and they can tell a weak positioning statement from a strong one in a minute. They run a planning cycle, sit in on the leadership meeting, manage the agencies and present to the board.
The trade-off is time and data. Most engagements buy one to three days a week, and public cost guides put the retainer between 5,000 and 25,000 USD a month. Between sessions the plan sits still. When a paid channel starts slipping on a Tuesday, the conversation about it often waits until the next call, and the numbers in that call are a report someone assembled by hand. If you are weighing this route, the guide on how to hire a fractional CMO covers interview questions, contract terms and red flags.
What VirtualCmo delivers as an AI CMO
VirtualCmo starts from the number your board already cares about. You give it a revenue target, your current run-rate, win rate, average deal size or order value and sales cycle. It works backwards to the pipeline, leads, traffic and spend you need each month, then proposes the channel split that gets you there.
- Strategy and plan. A marketing strategy, a budget split by channel and a quarterly and monthly plan with goals, owners and deadlines.
- Recommendation queue. Each recommendation carries its rationale, expected impact, risk and effort, with Approve, Auto-execute, Dismiss and Ask why. Typical examples are cutting Meta prospecting 22 percent, raising branded search or publishing 14 bottom-of-funnel pages.
- Seven agents doing the work. SEO, Paid Ads, Content, Email, Social, CRO and Competitor agents receive briefs, produce tasks and drafts and report status. The AI marketing agent page explains how orchestration differs from a single execution tool.
- Weekly accountability. It scores itself against the target each week and re-plans automatically when a KPI misses its band two weeks running.
- A one-page CEO report. On track or at risk, three decisions taken, three decisions needed.
- Unit economics. CAC, LTV, LTV to CAC, ROAS and payback by channel and cohort, so the budget follows what pays back.

What the AI CMO does not do
We would rather you buy the right thing. Software is good at allocation, monitoring and reporting. It is not the right tool for every senior marketing job, and a few of them still belong to a person.
- Brand taste and repositioning from scratch, where conviction matters more than data.
- Hiring, coaching and managing a marketing team, and the politics of a leadership group.
- Relationships with partners, analysts, press and large accounts.
- Brand new categories with no data yet, where the first months are customer interviews and experiments.
A worked example with stated assumptions
Take a services firm with 4 million USD in revenue that wants 5.5 million next year. Using the engine defaults for services, which are assumptions you can change, the average deal is 15,000 USD, the win rate 25 percent, lead to opportunity 18 percent, and marketing sources half of new revenue.
New revenue is 1.5 million, so marketing must source 750,000 USD, or 50 deals. At a 25 percent win rate that means 200 opportunities, and at 18 percent lead to opportunity about 1,111 qualified leads, roughly 93 a month. With program cost near 20 percent of deal value per new customer, the marketing budget lands around 150,000 USD a year, about 12,500 USD a month.
A human virtual CMO at 8,000 USD a month would cost 96,000 USD a year, close to two thirds of the budget being managed. VirtualCmo Growth billed yearly costs 3,588 USD a year and covers 4 of the 7 agents and 6 data sources, which fits a firm this size. The fractional CMO cost breakdown runs the same math for larger companies.

Frequently asked questions
Is a virtual CMO the same as a fractional CMO?
In the human market the terms are used almost interchangeably. Both mean a senior marketing leader working part time for you. Virtual tends to stress remote work, fractional tends to stress the share of a week. An AI CMO is a third option that does the planning and reporting layer in software.
Does VirtualCmo replace my marketing team?
No. It sets direction, splits the budget and briefs the agents, but your people still own brand, creative judgment, relationships and final approval on big calls. Many teams use it to get more out of the people they already have.
Will it change our ad accounts on its own?
Not unless you allow it. Data connections are read-only by default, Approve mode is the default, and auto-execute applies only to moves inside the guardrails you set. Every action lands in the decision log.
How much does it cost compared with virtual CMO services?
Plans run 299, 999 and 2,499 USD a month billed yearly, or 599, 1,999 and 4,999 monthly. Human virtual CMO retainers usually start around 5,000 USD a month. There is no free plan, only the free demo.
Can a human CMO and VirtualCmo work together?
Yes. Invite them as an Admin or Approver. The human sets direction and signs off on positioning, VirtualCmo keeps the plan current between sessions.
